Most of us now work in teams, in offices without walls, for managers who prize people skills above all. Lone geniuses are out. Collaboration is in.

But there’s a problem with this view. Research strongly suggests that people are more creative when they enjoy privacy and freedom from interruption

The Rise of the New Groupthink - NYTimes.com

The past 6 years I’ve worked in open office environments and have always felt like the distracted, noise and interruptions were slowly killing me. It’s nice to see articles like this challenging the herding of creatives into open rooms as a good strategy. I’m even an extrovert, energized from being with people. But when it comes to the creative process, and doing things well, being in an open office isn’t productive. I’d even say the collaboration that happens on the fly isn’t that helpful - it tends to be more distraction onto watching SNL on Hulu from the weekend or not being able to escape the long skype/phone call of the person near you.
