We want a master to follow. We want a king to command us. We want a ruler over us who will say do this and now do this and when you’re done with that do this. We, as artists, want to be an apprentice. To sit at the feet of the greats not so much so we can learn from them, but so we can have them give us the formula. No matter that the formula may not include our deepest heart’s longing. No matter that the formula may exclude our unique gifts or experience or background or the inner-weavings by a Master Artist. No matter that the formula may make us slave to ideas we do not agree with or are not passionate about. Better that we would have someone call the shots for us, at the expense of our freedom, then that we risk being wrong.
